Jan M. Lundberg, Ph.D., is executive vice president for science and technology and president of Lilly Research Laboratories (LRL). He is also a member of the company’s executive committee.
Lundberg joined Eli Lilly and Company on January 4, 2010, with responsibility for research and the development center of excellence at Lilly. Prior to assuming his position at Lilly, Lundberg served as global head of discovery research at AstraZeneca for 10 years and was a member of the senior executive team. He was involved with numerous candidate drug nominations, development projects, and support for marketed products.
After his medical education and receiving his Ph.D., Lundberg served as professor in the department of pharmacology, Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden. Lundberg has authored more than 500 original articles published in international peer-reviewed journals and is listed as one of the highly cited by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) in Neuroscience, Pharmacology, Biology and Biochemistry. He has given more than 100 invited lectures at international conferences in the areas of cell signaling in integrated systems (peptides, purines, nitric oxide)—application to nervous system, endocrine, inflammation, and cardiovascular areas. This research has been highly recognized and has received several awards, including Royal Swedish Scientific Academy; Anders Jahres Scandinavian Award; and Erik Fernström Award. He was also appointed honorary doctor of pharmacy at Uppsala University (2006).
Lundberg has served on several committees, including Evaluation Committee for the Swedish Medical Research Council; chairman, Ph.D., and postdoctoral programme at the Karolinska Institute; Executive Advisory Board, the Swedish Medical Products Agency Registration of New Drugs (preclinical representative); and the Strategic Research Foundation (industry representative).
Dr. Lundberg is the founder of a biotech company (Aerocrine AB) and also serves as chairperson of PhRMA’s Science and Regulatory Committee and is on the board of Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) and BioCrossroads.
