The most important contribution Lilly makes to society is through the time and talent of its employees.
Lilly’s volunteerism initiative, Hands and Hearts, encourages and rewards employees who engage in personal philanthropy. The initiative leverages the potential of more than 40,000 employees worldwide to contribute to their communities.
Major corporate initiatives include the following:

-
Global Day of Service
We regularly donate time and energy to local, charitable causes, but during our Global Day of Service, we do it all at once around the world. From Algeria to Taiwan, our employees have contributed thousands of hours to enhance the quality of life in our communities. Some examples include planting trees in Turkey to improve the health of the environment through reforestation, walking along the Great Wall in China to raise funds for MDR-TB, and participating in a variety of city beautification projects in our hometown of Indianapolis.

-
Lilly Science Education Outreach
Many employees in Lilly’s scientific community have a desire to strengthen the science curriculum in schools and encourage students to pursuer careers in science. They create opportunities for students and teachers to understand the breadth and depth of science and help them explore their own career interests.

-
ReadUP
ReadUP is a tutoring program in partnership with the Indianapolis Public Schools and the United Way of Central Indiana. It is a signature program of the Central Indiana Corporate Volunteer Council. As a member of the Council, Lilly and its employees stepped up in a big way to help kids read.
