We believe one of the best ways to manage the health care system is to encourage appropriate utilization of pharmaceutical products, which begins by educating patients on topics that may affect their health.
To accomplish this, Lilly has invested resources to develop numerous educational programs in both the public and private sectors in the U.S. and abroad.
In the U.S., we have taken this educational initiative one step further by seeking and receiving Program Design Certification from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for three disease management programs. Additionally, we have received Health Information Products (HIP) certification for a fourth intervention focusing on health education.
Our family of programs includes:
- Tools that Empower™ Depression Care Management Program was developed by experts in major depressive disorder, including practicing psychiatrists and psychologists, clinical research experts, managed care medical directors, and mental health specialty physicians. The foundation of this resource is based upon the APA Standards of Care for major depressive disorder, the HEDIS® measure for Antidepressant Medication and several other related, peer-reviewed articles. It is designed to assist you in your disease management efforts with a program that can be implemented in its entirety or by selecting components to augment your existing interventions.
- Tools That Empower™ Diabetes Management Program is a robust diabetes disease management program that contains more than 20 best-in-class tools and resources for care managers and diabetes program directors. It is based upon the American Diabetes Association clinical practice recommendations and HEDIS® performance measure.
- HealthInsights for Women is a disease management program that targets women 30 years and older about disease risk factors, and inspires them to make behavior changes that can lead to better health. All patient materials are now available in both English and Spanish.
NCQA certification is an indication that a DM Program has passed a rigorous review in a specific area, either program design, patient contact or disease management systems. According to the NCQA, certification standards are purposely set high to encourage organizations to continuously enhance their quality.
“Disease management offers tremendous promise for improving the care received by the chronically ill,” said Margaret E. O’Kane, president of NCQA. “By achieving NCQA DM Certification, an organization is showing that it is ready to provide specific services that can help fulfill that promise.”
The following Lilly intervention has achieved NCQA HIP certification for the Health Risk Appraisals (HRA) and Interactive Consumer Health Tools option:
- Health Education Answers (HEA) is a web-based program designed to help payer customers promote the health and wellness of their patients. Available in both English and Spanish, with full audio, the program begins at the “Wellness House” and progresses through an entire neighborhood of disease management and health overview modules – ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, Depression, Diabetes, Diabetes Complications, Manage Your Weight, Medication Safety, Men’s Health, Schizophrenia, Smoking & Addictions, and Women’s Health.
“Earning NCQA’s HIP Certification demonstrates that an organization has expertise in gathering and disseminating health care information for health plan members,” said Kathleen C. Mudd, vice president, product delivery. “Eli Lilly and Company is to be commended for being one of the first organizations in the nation to be reviewed for these services.”
Offering relevant, non-branded interventions that are based on the most recent clinical research and findings is one example of how Lilly seeks to meet the needs of patients.
